Rural Education And Literacy Development
NATIONAL LITERACY PROGRAM
CHILD READING, LITERACY AND EDUCATION PROGRAM IN SOUTH AFRICA
ZAMBIA ROYAL BIBLE MISSION
Nelson Mandela said;
‘Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world’
As a registered Non Profit missions organisation our objective is to live up to this statement by Mr Mandela, "education leads to empowerment", and therefore we urgently need to expand and increase our programs nationally. With more than 20 years of first hand and grass roots level experience, we understand the huge demand and enormous needs of our rural communities in Southern Africa, not only for , literacy, further education and skills development but also for support of their social and physical needs.
It is now commonly accepted that there is a deep crisis regarding the ‘culture of reading” in Africa. Only a very small section of the public reads and buys books, there is a virtual collapse of library services. South Africa, with a estimated population of 50,5 million (census 2011) with a quarter of the population unemployed and living on less US$ 1,20 per day has huge challenges awaiting its people.
With 43% of the population of South Africa living in rural areas, Rural schools in particular suffer from overcrowding, poor infrastructure such as collapsed ceilings and broken windows, and lack of non-textbook reading material. 32, 6 % of the population are between the age of 0-14 years. 568 963 Children are NOT attending school, of this large number 248 157 are girls.
37,5 % of the population of children who are suppose to attend grade one never start. Grade one is the foundation of a nation and the start of literacy reading and writing.Although a large part of young South Africans go through the schooling system, it is also commonly accepted that their reading and numeracy skills are very low – lagging behind that of their counterparts in the sub-region
To sum it up, South Africa is way down at number 68 of 138 countries when it comes to Literacy, with over 13, 6 % of its population is illiterate that’s 6 800 000 - 6,8 million plus people that cannot read or write. Of this number children are the most affected and neglected.

We envision South Africa to be a country in which all children can pursue a quality education, where they can reach their full potential and contribute to their community and the world. To achieve this goal, we focus on two areas where we believe we can have the greatest impact: literacy and gender equality in education.
We work in collaboration with local communities and government across all spheres to develop literacy skills and a habit of reading among primary school children, those in orphanages, non going school children and support girls to complete secondary school with the life skills they’ll need to succeed in school and beyond.
We are dedicated in promoting and enabling education through our programs focused on literacy and gender equality in education. We achieve this goal by establishing reading and literacy programs in Rural communities, schools, orphanages, old age homes as well as training parents, educators and teachers on literacy education and supporting girls to complete secondary school with the life skills necessary to succeed in school and beyond. Our new and national program will focus on improving the literacy skills of early grade readers with the goal of helping them become lifelong learners

Finally, a word from Kofi Annan, former United Nations Secretary-General
“Literacy unlocks the door to learning throughout life, is essential to
development and health, and opens the way for democratic
participation and active citizenship.”
Cancer support and education
Programs include education and support of children and families effected by Cancer and related illness. We are currently developing a new strategy to launch our Cancer support and education program Internationally throughout Southern Arica. Especially aimed at Rural Africa and children in particular.
* GLOBALLY CANCER KILLS MORE PEOPLE THAT TB, AIDS AND MALARIA COMBINED
* EVERY YEAR MORE THAN 12 MILLION PEOPLE WORLDWIDE ARE DIAGNOSED WITH CANCER
Worldwide, more than 80% of children with cancer live in resource-limited countries where access to care is poor. Sub-Saharan Africa is the world’s poorest region. The survival of children with cancer is very poor. Challenges to improving survival include advanced-stage disease at presentation, failure to start or complete treatment (abandonment), inadequate hospital infrastructure and medications, lack of trained health care providers, lack of cancer registration and follow-up and lack of treatment guidelines adapted to local medical facilities. We propose a stepwise approach that integrates paediatric cancer treatment with existing general paediatric care.
We are now busy to “walk the talk” and show the Community how easy it is to follow a cancer smart lifestyle, reducing the risk of developing cancer through dietary, sun protection and exercise measures.

PLAYGROUND MINISTRY
Volunteer teams go and build or develop new playground equipment or to refurbish existing playgrounds and equipment. The benefits of the development of playgrounds has got is immeasurable
It allows children the opportunity to develop co-ordination and motor skills in a fun and safe environment. It further develops the child’s physical strength, coordination and balance. It can also provide opportunities for children to learn and to develop their social skills, when they play with other children, Imagination and creativity, thinking and problem solving skills - as learn about having a go, persistence and perseverance and the success those attributes can bring. Sense of self - as they master new skills and play with other children they improve their competence and confidence in their own physical and social abilities. Develops a sense of connection - to place, to peers and to their local community and environment. Self care skills - managing physical and social challenges helps children to learn about keeping themselves safe.
17 – 21 DAY LITERACY GOSPEL SAFARI (Southern outreach)
Much needed books and stationary are handed out with each child attending our literacy program for free. The program lasts for anything from 14- 21 days depending on the amount of children needing specialized education and distance travelled. We also look aT the need for adult literacy, and asses the need in these areas.
The Literacy Safari package includes all transfers from O.R Tambo, International Airport, Johannesburg or Cape Town Inernational airport to all the different rural areas, in the country, accommodation and meals. Most of time we will be camping in the rural areas and villages. At some places along the way accommodation can be in huts, bush lodges or bungalows. All Literacy Safaris are lead by a professional experienced and qualified committed overland guide and assistant.
